Saluti Armonici presents Music of the Early Italian Baroque
Mention the name “Gabrieli” and the mind goes to Giovanni Gabrieli – a well recognized composer from 16thcentury Italy. There is however. another “Gabrielli” from the same time and area. Domenico Gabrielli was a virtuoso cellist from Bologna. Gabrielli and Merulo were cohorts of composers like Marco Uccellini, Andrea Falconiero and Johannes Kapsberger who together, represented a formidable repository of virtuosity in the lute, the organ, the violin, and in composition. Today, their Renaissance masterpieces are rarely heard, except when an ensemble like Saluti Armonici gets together.
Saluti Armonici is an ensemble comprising some of Australia’s finest emerging Baroque artists who are students or graduates of The University of Melbourne, The Australian National University, and The Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The group met through performing together at various Early Music workshops, and has developed into a venture that is exploratory as well as experimental whilst sharing wonderful, often forgotten music with audiences who follow this passion.
True to the origins of the music, the ensemble performs on period instruments – Linda Priebbenow and Tim Willis on the Baroque violin, Anthony Albrecht, Baroque cello, Ryan Williams, recorder and Matthew Horsley, percussion – are joined by special guest, lutenist Andrew Byrne.
Saluti Armonici promises to explore the exuberant harmonies that are the legacy of the Italians of the early seventeenth century, with their exaggerated passions and affects, ever changing moods and the incredible appearances of the unexpected.

Marini, Mealli, Merula and Falconiero
