SUMMARY:River City Voices presents Faurés Requiem
DESCRIPTION:River City Voices presents Faurés Requiem\, an inspirational concert offering an evening of luminous music that speaks to comfort\, renewal\, and quiet strength through the transcendent power of the human voice. \nAt the heart of the program is the timeless Requiem in D minor composed in 1890 by Gabriel Fauré\, a masterpiece loved for its serenity and radiant hope. Unlike many dramatic settings of the Requiem Mass\, Fauré’s work gently embraces themes of peace and eternal rest\, culminating in the ethereal beauty of In Paradisum. His music does not dwell in darkness but instead carries listeners toward light. \nPerformed by River City Voices under the direction of Guest Conductor Dr Philip Eames\, with Oscar Balle-Bowness\, it features the exceptional vocals of soprano Ayako Ohtake and baritone Benjamin Caukwell. They are joined by internationally acclaimed organist Simon Nieminski\, commanding the magnificent St Patrick’s Cathedral organ. Rich textures\, expressive solos\, and the warmth of blended voices promise an experience that resonates long after the final note fades. \nThis concert also features complementary choral works that echo the message of harmony and reflection\, including Holy Dreaming by Australian composer Alice Chance\, Geistliches Lied\, Op. 30 by Johannes Brahms (sung in German); Ave verum corpus by Franz Liszt (sung in Latin); The Lord’s Prayer (ed. 2025) by Australian composer Joseph Romeo and Padla by First Nations composer Nicole Smede. \nBookings \nDuration: approx. 70 minutes \nTickets: Adult $60\, Concession $45\, Young Classic (full-time student under 30) $30\, Child (under 18) $18 (a booking fee applies) \nImage credit Grant Leslie

SUMMARY:Sydney Chamber Choir Presents In Paradisum
DESCRIPTION:Sydney Chamber Choir invites you to In Paradisum\, a concert of rare beauty and intensity that offers reflection\, consolation and light. \nThis rich tapestry of choral music performed in the warm acoustic of St James’ King St\, is designed to let the sounds of Estonian\, Nordic and Australian composers unfold with beautiful resonance. \nAt the heart of the concert is Galina Grigorjeva’s In Paradisum\, music of luminous simplicity whose floating lines seem to suspend time itself. Sacred reflections continue in Edvard Grieg’s Ave Maris Stella\, radiant and gently lyrical\, and Knut Nystedt’s profound Stabat Mater\, a work of stark intensity and quiet anguish. From Arvo Pärt\, the choir performs Bogoroditse Dyevo — music of crystalline clarity that distils ancient texts into moments of piercing stillness. \nNorthern voices are also heard in Jan Sandström’s Det är en Ros Utsprungen (Lo\, How a Rose E’er Blooming)\, where traditional melody is suspended inside glowing modern harmonies\, and Sven-David Sandström’s Four Songs of Love\, a tender exploration of love in its many forms. The program turns to nature and memory in Veljo Tormis’s Autumn Landscapes\, music that feels elemental and rooted in the rhythms of the land. Urmas Sisask’s Benedictio brings a sense of celestial wonder\, while contemporary Australian voices are represented by Anne Cawrse’s The Greatest of These and Joe Twist’s Lament — each offering a distinct and deeply personal response to themes of loss\, tenderness and hope. \nFor the Nystedt and Twist\, the choir is delighted to be joined by acclaimed cellist Julian Smiles. \nBookings \nThis program will also be presented in Goulburn\, at the Hume Conservatorium of Music on 23 May.
