Susan Bullock and Richard Berkeley-Steele Talk About Singing Wagner
In their last function for the year, the Wagner Society of New South Wales counts down to Opera Australia’s Melbourne Ring with an opportunity to talk to two central characters in The Ring: the heroic Brünnhilde sung by dramatic soprano Susan Bullock and the scheming Loge, tenor Richard Berkeley-Steele.
Susan Bullock is one of the world’s most sought-after dramatic sopranos. She has appeared as Brünnhilde at the Wiener Staatsoper, and major houses world-wide. She has also performed Isolde in London, Frankfurt, Verona and Rouen and is the first ever soprano to sing four consecutive cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen at Covent Garden.
Richard Berkeley-Steele recently performed Tristan in Tristan und Isolde at Covent Garden. Other roles include the title roles in Tannhäuser and Lohengrin, Herod (Salome) with Deborah Voigt for Washington National Opera; Samson (Samson et Delilah); Sergei (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk) at Opera Australia, and Laca (Jenůfa) at the Metropolitan Opera, and Opera North. He performed Siegfried – notably in the 2001 Seattle Ring Cycle and at the English National Opera in 2004 under Paul Daniel; Siegmund – in the 2005 Seattle Ring Cycle under Robert Spano, in Germany and in Harry Kupfer’s production for the Gran Teatre del Liceu under Bertrand de Billy.
Society President Jane Mathews, AO, will chair a conversation with these critically acclaimed and established performers about their approach to singing Wagner.
The presentation will be preceded the DVD on The making of the Metropolitan Ring at 12 noon.
