Trailblazing JACK Quartet makes its Australian debut in Sydney
New York boy band the JACK Quartet will be performing at Carriageworks this August. With a reputation for virtuosity and fearless innovation, this string quartet pushed the boundaries with The Washington Post saying “The string quartet may be a 250-year-old contraption, but young, brilliant groups like the JACK Quartet are keeping it thrillingly vital.”
Making its Australian debut at Carriageworks, JACK Quartet has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Wigmore Hall, the Lucerne Festival, Paris’ Salle Pleyel and the Venice Biennale.
Violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Kevin McFarland met as undergraduates at the Eastman School of Music. They’ve studied with the Arditti Quartet, Kronos Quartet, Muir String Quartet, and members of the Ensemble Intercontemporain and worked with significant composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, amongst them Brian Ferneyhough, Beat Furrer, Georg Friedrich Haas, Vijay Iyer, György Kurtág, Helmut Lachenmann, and Steve Reich,
On Friday 16 August, JACK will perform an interpretation of G. F. Haas’s String Quartet No. 3 ‘In iij. Noct’ performed in total darkness. Their Los Angeles performance of this was described by Mark Swed in theLos Angeles Times as “mind-blowingly good.”
On Saturday 17 August, a second concert will feature works by Luigi Nono, Jason Eckardt, and a new work by Sydney composer Jack Symonds.
