Classical Inspirations from the Sirius Ensemble

The Sirius Chamber Ensemble connects the new with the old in a programme of classics derived from works by earlier masters.

Ian Sykes, clarinet, Georgina Price, viola, Clare Kahn, cello, Julia Zeltzer, French horn, Alison Evans, bassoon, and pianist Clare Howard Race, present a programme of Beethoven, Bernstein, Neilsen and Mozart.

Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds in E flat opus 16 was composed when he was just 16. It was inspired by Mozart’s Quintet K 452. Written in the same key and with the same scoring, it emulates mozart’s quintet but has its distinctive style.

Leonard Bernstein’s Clarinet Sonata was the first of his compositions to be published. Its form and style derive from the Romantic tradition and its sweeping lines and rhythms foreshadow the popular tunes of West Side Story.

Carl Nielsen’s Wind Quintet remains his most performed composition. His use of traditional folk song in a chorale setting, and a structure firmly rooted in the Classical tradition are his inspirations from the past.

Also on the program is Mozart’s  Kegelstatt trio for clarinet, viola, K 498, also in E flat.  The word kegelstatt refers to a bowling alley and Mozart may have dashed it off during a game of skittles.
