Australian Haydn Ensemble Plays Haydn, Bach And Mendelssohn

February 19, 2023 @ 5:00 pm

The Australian Haydn Ensemble launches into 2023 with Haydn’s Sun & Mendelssohn’s Stars – a program spanning the spectrum of light and dark with music by Haydn, JS Bach and Mendelssohn.

The program opens with the last of  Haydn’s Op. 20, Sun quartets, the No. 6 in A major, and closes with Mendelssohn’s early String Quartet No. 2, Op. 13, in A minor, said to be inspired by his yearning and mysterious love song, ‘Is it true?’.

Also on the program, selections from J S Bach’s mighty Art of Fugue. Although Haydn and Bach did not meet, Haydn may have heard Mozart’s string arrangements of fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier and marvelled at the intricate clockwork of Bach’s final statement on the subject as performed here by quartet.

The ensemble will tour around NSW from 10 February to 19 February, including Armidale, Canberra, Berry, the Southern Highlands and Sydney. More information.

The program: HAYDN J String Quartet in A major Op. 20 No. 6 (Sun Quartets)/ BACH JS Selections from The Art of Fugue/ MENDELSSOHN F String Quartet in A minor Op. 13

The performers: AHE STRING QUARTET: Skye McIntosh, violin/Matthew Greco, violin/Karina Schmitz, viola/Daniel Yeadon, cello
