Cello and piano. Music and conversation. Coffee and cake.

July 3 @ 11:00 am

Musica Viva Australia presents a winning partnership in their Sydney Morning Masters series when Jonathan Békés and Ying Ho perform sonatas for cello and piano by Beethoven and Shostakovich.

Békés is a prize-winning soloist who is principal cellist with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, while Ying Ho is a Sydney-based pianist in demand as a repetiteur, teacher, accompanist and musical partner. Together they bring their unique voices to two sonatas inspired by musical friendships.

Beethoven’s Sonata No. 3 for cello and piano was composed in 1807, the same year as the first performance of his mighty fifth symphony, and was dedicated to Ignaz von Gleichenstein, an amateur cellist and close friend. Unlike Beethoven’s symphonic blockbuster, the sonata has a quiet nobility, each instrument finding an equal voice in a sparkling conversation. Békés and Ho pair this sonata with Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D, written for his good friend and musical partner, the cellist Viktor Kubatsky.

Then it’s over to you for a Q+A with the artists, hosted by Musica Viva Australia’s Director of Concerts, Katherine Kemp.

Pre-Concert Morning Tea (from 10am): Enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and cake with friends before the concert begins, thanks to the generosity of the Wenkart Foundation.

Standard tickets – $50/ Under 40 – $20 / Student Rush – $10 (ID Required)
