Lam And Grabowsky Combine Baroque And Jazz

June 18, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - June 20, 2022 @ 7:00 pm

Musica Viva Australia presents an exciting new take on J S Bach’s Goldberg Variations, bringing together one of Australia’s most distinguished artists Paul Grabowsky and award-winning Yale-trained pianist Andrea Lam, for a nine-concert national tour in June. The concert on 25 June willbe live-streamed. This extraordinary concert will be a treat for classical and jazz fans alike, with its unique presentation of one of the world’s most iconic pieces of Western music.

In 1741, J.S. Bach sketched a simple, almost transparent, aria that he then spun into 30 miraculous variations: the Goldberg Variations. In this unique performance, Lam and Grabowsky will come together to present two very different takes on the work. As Artistic Director Paul Kildea says, ‘Bringing Andrea Lam and Paul Grabowsky together for this Goldberg project – in which they will both hold up a mirror to their respective musical worlds – will shine a bright light on this work for the ages’.

Pianist Andrea Lam, will first perform the Variations as Bach originally wrote them. Paul Grabowsky will then, in turn, create his own
extraordinary, jazz-inflected interpretation of Bach’s eternally beautiful theme. For Paul Grabowsky this also continues his process of creative collaborations which includes artists as diverse as Archie Roach, Paul Kelly, Ngaiire and Kate Ceberano.
