Omega Ensemble Goes Baroque

April 15, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Omega Ensemble’s Baroque goes ballistic program features Gorecki’s explosive Concerto for Harpsichord and Penderecki’s darkly beautiful Sinfonietta No. 2. These dazzling modern masterworks defy expectations while embracing the flair, colour and virtuosity of the Baroque.

At the centre of this performance is a world premiere Harpsichord Concerto by multi-Grammy Award and Pulitzer Prize winning American composer Caroline Shaw, whose music moves among roles, genres, and mediums, imagining a world of sound that has always existed yet never heard before.

With a significant compositional output in the last decade, including works for Anne Sofie von Otter, Yo Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, LA Phil, and many others, Caroline’s Shaw’s collaborators also include the likes of Rosalía and Nas. One of the most influential composers of the 20th-century, Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sinfonietta No. 2  features the composer’s infamous string wizardry and affection for elegies. With driving motor rhythms and vigorous virtuosic playing, Henryk Gorecki’s Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings is a dichotomy of ideas and sounds that places the past firmly in the present.
