Sydney Art Quartet Presents Colour Music
November 2 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Sydney Art Quartet presents Colour Music, a venture into the connection between colour and music, sight and sound. This exploration of the phenomenon of ‘synaesthaesia’ features a series of world premieres by Sydney based composer Nicholas Vines, juxtaposed with Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor, Op. 76 No. 2, “Fifths” (1797), his Piano Trio No. 34 in B-Flat Major, Op. 36 No. 3 (1794) and one of the pioneers of modern Australian painting, Roy de Maistre.
Comprising violinists Thibaud Pavlovic-Hobba and Anna Albert, viola player Andrew Jezek and cellist Andrew Hines, the performance by the SAQ will be introduced by Steven Miller, the former head of the National Art Archive at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, who will be joined on the podium by composer Nicholas Vines to discuss art, music and composition.
De Maistre was fascinated with colour therapy administered to shell-shocked soldiers by putting them in rooms painted in soothing colour combinations. He developed his theory of colour harmonisation based on the relationship between colours of the spectrum and notes of the musical scale and also the manner in which the colours within a room could impact upon the human psyche.
Two concerts, 2 pm and 5 pm
Free composition masterclass at 4pm
Tickets $80/adult, $20/student/child
