Sydney University Graduate Choir Presents Handel’s Esther

August 13, 2023 @ 3:00 pm

The Sydney University Graduate Choir performs Handel’s magnificent oratorio Esther in the grand surroundings of the Great Hall of Sydney University.
Set in the ancient court of King Xerxes of Persia, Handel’s first ever oratorio tells the story of Esther, a Jewish orphan who wins the affection of the King and becomes the Queen of Persia, unmasking the treachery of Prime Minister Haman to save the Jewish people from a horrible fate.
This landmark work was so successful, it marked the birth of the English oratorio and includes beautiful dramatic and lyrical movements, ending with a virtuosic and grandiose 13 minute long final chorus that only a young 33 year old ambitious and outrageously gifted Handel could have written.
Christopher Bowen OAM will conduct the choir and orchestra with six wonderful soloists, sopranos Amy Moore and tler, alto Timothy Chung, tenors Richard Butler and Alexander Young and bass Simon Lobelson.
