Facade – An Entertainment
Facade An Entertainment is a boundlessly imaginative interplay of words and music, tripping joyfully through English life, highlighting the nonsensical, the peculiar and quixotic! William Walton’s music is written for a small chamber ensemble of 6 players to poems by Edith Sitwell spoken in time to the music.
These thirty-one musical vignettes that capture the wit, frivolity and blithe spirit of the 1920’s will be performed by Silvia Colloca & Simon Lobelson
In the 1920’s William Walton’s inspired musical settings of Edith Sitwell’s surrealist poetry caused an outrage when performed with their scandalous modern sounds and absurdist prose. The cryptic words spoken through a megaphone by Sitwell herself, hidden behind a screen, together with Walton’s jazz-inspired music and rhythms of Tango, Foxtrot, Tarantella and Waltz through to the modern sounds of Stravinsky and Satie caused a sensation.
Grouped together as Facade Entertainments, these idiosyncratic musical miniatures are today celebrated for capturing the eccentricity of 1920’s surrealist music performance like no other work.
