Marie Bashir Farewell Musical Tribute
Outgoing Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir, AD CVO has been a familiar figure at concerts and other arts events around Sydney.
Appointed in March 2001 as the state’s first female governor, she will retire on 1 October 2014 after her term as the second longest-serving governor of NSW.
The Sydney Opera House will present the Marie Bashir Farewell Musical Tribute to acknowledge Dame Marie Bashir’s patronage of the arts.
The Marie Bashir Farewell Musical Tribute hosted by ABC Classic FM’s Damien Beaumont will feature some of Sydney’s finest talent from ensembles long supported by Governor Bashir, amongst them,
– Opera Australia’s Teddy Tahu Rhodes singing This nearly was mine from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific, Emma Matthews singing Squallida veste, e bruna from Rossini’s Il turco in Italia and Natalie Aroyan singing Micaela’s Aria from Bizet’s Carmen;
– The Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing the final two movements of Brahms’s Symphony No 2, led by chief conductor David Robertson;
– The Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, led by Paul Dyer AO in a collaboration with singer-songwriter Marcus Corowa, and a performance by the Brandenburg Choir;
– A music and dance performance from Moa Island, in the Torres Strait, presented by Musica Viva and the NAISDA Dance College.

Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to two organisations close to Governor Bashir’s heart: the Wayside Chapel in Kings Cross; and Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets.
