Matthias Goerne: Schubert Revisited

Matthias Goerne, distinguished baritone and one of the most high-profile Schubertians of this generation, has recorded a selection of Schubert’s songs not in their original versions with piano but in orchestral arrangements by Alexander Schmalcz, Goerne’s accompanist of many years’ standing.

The collection, SCHUBERT REVISITED: LIEDER ARRANGED FOR BARITONE AND ORCHESTRA, gives a fresh perspective on Schubert’s writing as Goerne says about Alexander Schmalcz’s arrangements: “His creativity in adapting these songs for the orchestra is enormous, while his stylistic sensibilities and his subtle approach in deploying the right instruments at the right moment are truly astonishing.”

Released on the Deutsche Grammophon label, the recording features the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen with Florian Donderer as concertmaster and leader.

The tracks include lieder with text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Schäfers Klagelied D 121, Erlkönig D 328 and Ganymed D 544), Shakespeare (An Silvia D 891) and other favourites like Der Tod und das Mädchen D 531 and Abendstern D 806.
