Portrait Composition: Sally Whitwell Gets Close To The Art of Glass

PGCC

Hot on the heels of her involvement with the Brooklyn Academy of Music performances of the Philip Glass Etudes, double ARIA Award winning pianist, composer, conductor and educator Sally Whitwell is performing the music of Glass at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in association with their exhibition of works by American painter and photographer Chuck Close.

Says Sally “I’ll be performing Glass’s Musical Portrait of Chuck Close a piece that Glass specially dedicated to his dear friend, a kind of return gift following Close’s portraits of him. The two movement work eventually became Etudes 12 and 13, which seemed rather neat to me. I’ll perform another couple of the Etudes (Numbers 2 and 3) as well as an old favourite of mine Opening from my CD Glassworks.”

Considered a specialist in the interpretation of the solo piano music of Philip Glass, Sally recently performed Philip Glass’s complete piano etudes at the Perth International Arts Festival, sharing the stage with the composer himself and Japanese pianist Maki Namekawa. She was awarded the 2011 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album for her debut recording Mad Rush: Solo Piano Music of Philip Glass.

There are 8 short performances.

Tickets: Concerts are free after museum entry.
