Western Sydney Philharmonic Launches WestPhil Chamber Orchestra
Western Sydney University (WSU) and Western Sydney Philharmonic (WSP) announce a partnership that will strengthen music education, increase access to musical performances, and develop career pathways for musicians in Western Sydney. It will also provides a much-needed permanent home base for WSP for rehearsals, training and concerts.
As well, there will be a public concert on Sunday October 5 to launch the 2026 program and the WestPhil Chamber Orchestra (WPCO) led by its Artistic Director Peter Clark, a celebrated violinist from the New Zealand String Quartet, who has previously performed with the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s Inspire Quartet, and Sydney’s Omega Ensemble.
Taking place at Sir Ian & Nancy Turbott Auditorium in Parramatta, this public concert debuts the WPCO, a flagship ensemble of emerging professional musicians. Supported by a newly launched scholarship fund, each player has been awarded a bursary to enable their full participation.
Together, the organisations will deliver world-class musical performances and establish a vibrant cultural hub for Greater Sydney, expanding community access to professional-level performances and creative learning experiences. The collaboration creates new pathways for young musicians to gain skills, training and real-world experiences in the arts, undertaking internships, placements and mentoring in areas such as arts management, music education, orchestral operations and production.
WSP will operate across three integrated layers in 2026, offering support, development and continuity for young musicians from beginner to professional, all based in Western Sydney.
1. WSP Soloists will give recitals and masterclasses across Western Sydney. These soloists will also rehearse and perform with the WPCO. Confirmed artists in 2026 are Amalia Hall (violin), Konstantin Shamray (piano), and Kyle Stegall (tenor).
2. WestPhil Chamber Orchestra (WPCO) is an orchestra sui generis: a unique ensemble of emerging professional musicians, working alongside distinguished mentors and international soloists. Every participant is supported by a scholarship, ensuring access and enabling full commitment. As the core of WSP’s training and performance system, the WPCO delivers concerts of the highest artistic calibre throughout the year at WSU and other major venues.
3. The Advocates is the WSP feeder program, for advanced school-aged musicians, with three intensive school holiday workshops each year. WPCO musicians act as section leaders and mentors. The Advocates create a pathway directly feeding into WestPhil Chamber Orchestra.
Founded by Chair Max Holzner and launched in 2022 by Patron Kim Williams AM, Western Sydney Philharmonic is the only orchestral organisation dedicated to creating a professional-standard training pipeline for Greater Western Sydney, one of Australia’s fastest-growing and most culturally diverse regions. Under Artistic Director Peter Clark, it will connect school-age musicians, emerging musicians, and international soloists, opening clear pathways from the region to the wider industry.
