The Metropolitan Orchestra with Conductor and Artistic Director Sarah-Grace Williams celebrates its seventh birthday with a world premiere performance from acclaimed Australian composer Sean O’Boyle AM, based on Mendelssohn’s work titled Fantasy on a Theme of Mendelssohn and a performance of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony no 4, which was performed by TMO in their first ever concert back in 2009.

The concert, entitled The Italian includes Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and Strauss’ Horn Concerto no 1.

Strauss’ Horn Concerto features TMO’s Principal Horn, Michael Wray as soloist. This Strauss composition shows the strong influence of Mendelssohn in what is known as one of the most demanding works written for the French Horn.

The second half of the programme opens with Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture. Written for Heinrich Joseph von Collin’s 1804 tragedy Coriolan, this arousing and emotional work sets the final musical scene of the evening with Mendelssohn’s Symphony no 4, ‘The Italian’. The origins of Mendelssohn’s symphony derive from his tour of Europe where he was inspired by the colour and atmosphere of Italy. Several of the musicians who will be performing on the night also performed at the inaugural concert.

The programme: O’BOYLE Fantasy on a Theme of Mendelssohn World Premiere/ STRAUSS Horn Concerto no 1/ BEETHOVEN Coriolan Overture /MENDELSSOHN Symphony no 4 Italian

Conductor: Sarah-Grace Williams/ Horn: Michael Wray (Principal Horn, TMO)
