Sydney has a brand new early music ensemble The Muffat Collective, comprising harpsichordist Anthony Abouhamad, viola da gamba player Anton Baba, and Baroque violinists Matthew Greco and Rafael Font-Viera. The musicians met in the Netherlands where they were based for several years, studying and performing with Europe’s leading period instrument orchestras.

Trinity Grammar School’s Society of the Arts is proud to present The Muffat Collective in concert with a programme including François Couperin’s mythical L’Apothéose de Corelli,  Arcangello Corelli’s Sonate da Chiesa Op.3, No.2 in D Major and French violinist and lace-maker Jean Marie Leclair’s Overture & Trio Sonata, No. 2 in D Major, Opus 13. They will perform in the Delmar Gallery where the acoustics are well suited to baroque instruments. The ensemble is named after the French born Baroque composer Georg Muffat.

Although members of the Muffat Collective also play together regularly in the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and Pinchgut Opera – Orchestra of the Antipodes, they are keen to share their passion for and scholarship in the Baroque, in a more intimate recital format. This will be their second programme as The Muffat Collective, in which they will play sonatas of the Italian and French Baroque.

François Couperin displays a delightful eccentricity when he composed a programmatic work depicting Corelli, ascending the mythical Greek Mount Parnassus. On his way, Corelli celebrates his artistry with muses and drinks from the fount of inspiration.Couperin was a quiet, amiable and indeed, eccentric man! He was also an incredibly influential French composer, organist and harpsichordist of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He believed that by uniting the French and Italian styles, he could “make perfection in music.”
