APRA AMCOS Art Music Winners 2016

The APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards for 2016 have been announced, recognising the creative successes of musicians across the nation, in a broad range of styles. Winners in 11 national categories and eight state and territory categories were announced in Melbourne earlier this week.

Percussionist Claire Edwardes has been recognised twice over. She won the award for Excellence by an Individual in her works as a performer, advocate and artistic leader. As well, the ensemble of which she is artistic director, Ensemble Offspring, won the award for Excellence by an Organisation for its activities in 2015 and sustained services to Australian music over two decades.

Kate Neal’s Semaphore featured in two awards, winning the award for Instrumental Work of the Year; its realistion by Semaphore band and dancers was awarded Performance of the Year.

The Award for Distinguished Services to Australian Music was presented to composer Helen Gifford OAM.

The New South Wales State Award went to Sydney Chamber Opera, for their performance of Elliott Gyger’s Fly Away Peter in the category of Performance of the Year.

Presented jointly by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Music Centre (AMC), the Art Music Awards is a national event that acknowledges the achievements of Australian composers, performers and educators in the genres of contemporary art music, jazz and experimental music.
