barenboim to head la scala

Milan’s Teatro alla Scalahas named Daniel Barenboim as its next music director. The post has been vacant since the departure of Ricardo Muti in 2005. Barenboim has been principal guest conductor a the theatre, and takes up the permanent post in early December, in time for the opening of the season, traditionally held annually on the 7th of December.

Barenboim joins an illustrious list of music directors who have served at La Scala which includes Carlo Maria Giulini, Tullio Serafin and Arturo Toscanini. The theatre was also home to the premieres of a vast variety of operas, including Salieri’s Europa riconosciuta, Bellini’s Norma, Verdi’s Otello, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, Poulenc’s Dialogue of the Carmelites, and three of Stockhausen’s seven operas in the Licht cycle.
