Cupid and Death: Debut Production For The Pearl And Dagger Company
The Pearl and Dagger Company present Cupid and Death, a 17th century English masque that weaves a hilarious yet moralistic tale. A delight for the senses with dancing, singing, theatre and music. Directed by Nadia Piave, choreography by Fiona Garlick of the Early Dance Consort and music from some of Australia’s finest period musicians and singers, this masque, a theatrical spectacular performed mainly in the royal courts the 16th and 17 th centuries will come to life in Sydney.
Masques are rarely performed today and the fledgling Pearl and Dagger Company is thrilled to present as their debut performance, Cupid and Death written by the playwright James Shirley, with music composed by Matthew Locke and Christopher Gibbons. Loosely based on a fable by Aesop, Cupid and Death are staying at the same inn. They leave the next day carrying the wrong arrows. Chaos ensues ensuring a charming comedy.
Company artistic directors Tara Hashambhoy and Imogen Granwal are keen to bring this rare work to modern audiences following the traditions of historical performance practice.
