Genevieve Lacey To Deliver 2013 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address
The 2013 Peggy Glanville-Hicks Address presented under the auspices of the New Music Network will be delivered by Genevieve Lacey, recorder virtuoso, collaborator and recording artist.
Speaking on the topic Learning to Listen, she will explore the concept that musicians have to be consummate listeners as well as creators of sound. “Being deeply attentive, hearing complexity, and noticing subtlety are not just professional music practices, but tenets for living. Learning to listen has radical potential” she says.
In an innovative move, Genevieve Lacey will perform a suite of one-minute miniatures as part of her address. Conceived as chapter headings, the pieces will be threaded through the talk, heightening the listening experience, and drawing us back repeatedly to the eloquence and power of live music. These miniatures by Lou Bennett, Elena Kats-Chernin, Andrea Keller, James Ledger and John Rodgers have been especially commissioned for this year’s address.
Genevieve Lacey has retrieved the recorder from its consignment to medieval history and set about creating new possibilities for her instrument. She has commissioned, created, premiered and recorded scores of new works. Genevieve plays music from ten centuries, taking her instruments into communities and a variety of unusual venues around the world. She performs around the world as a soloist and has a substantial recording catalogue with ABC Classics. For 2012-13, she is the recipient of a Fellowship from the Australia Council for the Arts.
Genevieve created en masse with London filmmaker Marc Silver, and the music for Namatjira, commissioned by Scott Rankin, Big hART and the Namatjira family. Namatjira toured Australia 2010-12, and will premiere at London Southbank in 2013. She curated the live music performances for the APRA-AMC Art Music Awards 2013.
Her work has won several awards including an ARIA, Helpmann, Australia Council, Freedman and Churchill Fellowships. Genevieve holds academic and performance degrees (including a doctorate) in music and English literature from universities in Melbourne, Switzerland and Denmark. Between 2008-2012 she was the Artistic Director for Four Winds Festival.
