The world-renowned period ensemble Les Arts Florissants along with vocal ensemble Le Jardin des Voix, returns to Australia after more than a decade.

Conducted by its founder William Christie, the 23 piece instrumental ensemble will be touring with an ensemble of 6 singers, laureates of the orchestra’s vocal academy, Le Jardin des Voix (The Garden of Voices). Together they will present Un Jardin à l’italienne, (An Italian Garden), a programme of rarities and favourites from the Italian Baroque operatic repertoire.

The programme will include a semi-staged selection of highlights from 17th and 18th Century Italian opera including arias by Handel, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Cimarosa and their contemporaries.

William Christie, was born in New York in 1944. He studied at Harvard and Yale Universities and moved to France in 1971. He founded Les Arts Florissants in 1979, named after the opera by Marc-Antoine Charpentier . The orchestra pioneered the re-creation of music from the 16th to 18th centuries, reviving and popularising many forgotten masterpieces. The ensemble has created a substantial catalogue of recordings of instrumental music and operas and worked with some of the world’s most revered soloists and theatre directors.

One of Christie’s most conspicuous successes is the Jardin des Voix program for emerging Baroque singers. In this biennial programme, the singers undertake a two-week intensive at the Théâtre de Caen in Normandie, after which they tour in concert with the orchestra.
