The NSW Doctors Orchestra presents Around the World in 80 minutes, its annual fundraising concert which this year features music from all around the globe. As well, the concert showcases pianist Simon Tedeschi who will perform Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, and the Hummingsong Women’s choirs.

Musicus Medicus is an orchestra founded in 2004 by General Practitioner Dr Cathy Fraser to give NSW Doctors and medical students an opportunity to enjoy music together. Every year about 80 doctors come together from both metropolitan and rural NSW and from across the medical disciplines to share a passion for music, and to raise money for medical charities and young musicians. They are conducted by GP Dr David Banney, winner of the 1995 ABC-Westfield Australian Young Conductor of the Year Award.

Every year the orchestra supports a medical charity and this year the selected charity is the Save Sight Institute at Sydney Eye Hospital, which leads the way in finding innovative new ways to preserve and restore vision lost to all eye diseases, including glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinal dystrophies, uveitis and inflammatory conditions. Staffed by Australia’s best ophthalmologists, researchers and scientists, the Institute boasts two world-class laboratories and a large clinic, and is responsible for teaching the next generation of eye doctors through the University of Sydney’s discipline of clinical ophthalmology and eye health.

As well, Musicus Medicus funds the NSW Drs Orchestra Sydney Eisteddfod Instrumental Scholarship for 16-25 year olds, worth $10,500 annually. Since its inception in 2006, over 350 aspiring instrumentalists have performed on its stages. Over the past nine years, this scholarship has contributed some $100,000 to the cultural capital of the nation by making it possible for nine outstanding young musicians to study abroad.

Musicus Medicus also supports the Young Virtuosi Program run by Fine Music 102.5FM, funding the 3rd prize in the competition.
