Powerful Cross-Cultural Collaboration From Tura New Music

Tura New Music will bring Kimberley Echoes to ACT and NSW in November and December.  The powerful cross-cultural celebration of Kimberley country and its people is the result of 5 years of development and regional and remote touring in the region.

The tour kicks off in Darwin at the The Playhouse, Darwin Entertainment Centre at 7.30 pm on Wednesday November 20 and then takes in the Four Winds Concerts in Bermagui November 24, Dance Rites at the Sydney Opera House November 23, Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre November 25, Albury Entertainment Centre November 26, Mebourne and regional Victoria, concluding at the Canberra Theatre Centre on December 3. Over the next two years the production will head to Asia and Europe.

Curated by Tura, the highly acclaimed production features The Narli Ensemble (Nar-lee) in a close collaboration between high-profile First Nation artists and some of the country’s finest instrumentalists, Mark Atkins (didgeridoo virtuoso and singer) Stephen Pigram (guitar and vocals). violinist Erkki Veltheim, guitarist Stephen Magnusson, cellist Tristen Parr, percussionist Joe Talia and flautist Tos Mahoney, Tura Founder and Artistic Director.

The powerful cross-cultural celebration of Kimberley country and its people is a richly varied sonic and visual experience. Awe inspiring footage of Kimberley landscape and work of artists from Art Centre partners will be projected onto huge screens, immersing audiences in the spirit of the Kimberley.

Songs by Pigram and Atkins, arranged by this unique ensemble, are juxtaposed with new music created by the collaboration all reflecting the complexity and beauty of the Kimberley. Collaborations with local artists, experiences of traditional Joonba song and dance and touring through the provocative Kimberley landscape have all weaved their influence into this work and program.

A special edition CD by the same name will be available during the tour, whilst post-tour new recordings and videos will be available on-line.  Recent Echoes tours of the Kimberley will feature in a documentary by award-winning film maker James Bogle, planned for national and international release in 2020.
