Selby & Friends Gather a World of Musicians in 2014
Chamber music specialists Selby & Friends have rolled out their line-up for 2014. Pianist, founder and Artistic Director Kathy Selby, AM will perform with old friends and new, from Australia and around the world. Chameleon -like, the ensemble will morph from duos to larger ensembles to perform world premieres as well as cornerstones of the chamber repertoire with a special focus on the chamber music of Beethoven.
Kathy Selby has drawn her guest performers from Australia and around the world – Sweden, Finland, Britain, Germany and the USA. Together, they will perform world premières by Paul Dean and Clancy Newman alongside masterworks by Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Fauré and Grieg.
The series opens in March with New York based Australian cellist Clancy Newman returning to Selby & Friends to perform Mozart, Brahms, Schubert and a world premiere of one of his works, Collision Course. Competing the ensemble for this concert are violinist and Concertmaster of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra Natalie Chee, S&F Development Artist clarinettist Som Howie and Kathy Selby.
The second tour in May sees the return of another New York based Australian, violinist Susie Park, who will join Finnish born cellist and principal with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Timo-Veikko Valve in an all Beethoven celebration. In June/July, violinist Daniel Dodds and cellist Julian Smiles from the Goldner quartet and the Australia Ensemble, make up a trio with Selby to perform more Beethoven, Faure and Tchaikovsky. The Australian born Daniel Dodds was mooted by the great Nathan Milstein to be Paganini’s grandson! Adept in chamber, orchestral and cross-over styles, Dodds is Artistic Director of the Festival Strings in Lucerne, He has also performed with Claudio Abbado’s Lucerne Festival Orchestra and is Co-Concert-Master for the Australian World Orchestra.
Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen makes up a duo with Kathy Selby for the September series. Thedéen has a busy career teaching in northern Europe and has performed with the major orchestras of Europe, amongst them, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, under conductors like Esa-Pekka Salonen, Paavo Berglund, Neeme Järvi, Franz Welser-Möst, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Leif Segerstam. He and Selby he will play the music of Debussy, Beethoven and Greig, along with the world premiere of a Selby & Friends Audience commission by Paul Dean.
Finally in November, Selby & Friends’ second Development Artist for 2013, double bassist Hugh Kluger joins Selby, Adelaide based British violinist Elizabeth Layton, Principal Violist with the Sydney Symphony Tobias Breider and Julian Smiles, to play Mozart, Brahms and the wonderful Piano Quintet in A major D 667, The Trout, by Schubert.
