The Brandenburg Quartet, formed in 2016, is about to undertake its third and biggest national tour in April taking in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and this time adding a Queensland leg with a concert at The Old Museum in Brisbane. The programme will include music by Boccherini, Beethoven, Jadin and Brunetti.

A brilliant addition to the Australian music landscape, the quartet comprises the four principal string players of the multi ARIA Award-winning Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, hailing from Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.

Together, Shaun Lee-Chen from Perth on period violin, Ben Dollman from Adelaide on period violin, Monique O’Dea from Sydney on period viola and Jamie Hey from Melbourne on period cello will perform well-loved quartets of the classical repertoire as well as brilliant works by composers rarely heard today. Like the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, they are unique in that they play on instruments of the period using gut strings, rather than modern steel or nylon strings.

“The sound of gut strings on period instruments is raw, rich and complex,” says Perth’s Shaun Lee-Chen, the Brandenburg’s concertmaster and first violin in the quartet. “In this configuration we are bringing the unique sound of the Brandenburg into more intimate settings, showing well-known masterpieces in a new light, as well as exploring lesser-known gems, and we feel very passionate about that.”
The members of the quartet are all at the forefront of period instrument playing in Australia and, like the greatest string quartets, their close personal and professional relationships give them a particular edge. “We have played together and been extremely close friends for many years,” says Shaun. “We have a special dynamic and love being and playing together. This means that we bring to the stage something which is unique and personal.”
