The Metropolitan Orchestra Plays Bruch And Sibelius

The Metropolitan Orchestra’s eleventh season caps off another incredible year of music-making.

Conducted by Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Sarah-Grace Williams, the concert begins with Borodin’s In The Steppes of Central Asia. This thematic work is a vibrant start to an incredible night filled with wonderful musical imagery. Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 is one of the most performed violin concertos of all time, and along with the Scottish Fantasy, is the composer’s most famous work.

TMO introduces their vivacious concertmaster, Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich as soloist for this lyrical and complex concerto. A passionate musician dedicated to music education and the use of music in healing, Victoria will be donating her performance fee to TMO’s Health Charity of Choice, Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, a not-for-profit, comprehensive cancer hospital specialising in care from screening and prevention to diagnosis, treatment and wellness.

TMO’s Sarah-Grace Williams is a long-term patient of Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. Cancer has also touched Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich’s life with her mother having been diagnosed with, and surviving breast cancer. Victoria’s grandmother was not so fortunate, passing from lung and breast cancer. “Music helps me to ride the emotional waves of life. I hope to inspire young people who may be going through difficult times to turn to the power of music for healing. I’m so thrilled to be stepping out of the Concert Master seat to perform as soloist for this outstanding work with The Metropolitan Orchestra,” said Victoria.

Sibelius’ Symphony Number 5 is inspired by the flight of Swans making it an ideal finale for 2019. The magnificent work is characteristic of Sibelius’ mature and illustrative style featuring nebulous beginnings followed by a majestic emergence of compelling grandeur, through music filled with momentum and surging with life, to a final, exhilarating rush of energy.
