The Nose Opens In Sydney

Barrie Kosky’s new production of the rarely performed Shostakovich classic The Nose, for Opera Australia, premieres in Sydney this summer, following its critically acclaimed debut at the Royal Opera in London in 2017. A co-production with the Royal Opera, Covent Garden and Berlin’s Komische Oper, The Nose was widely praised described by The Spectator as “terrifically realised, brilliantly inventive and highly entertaining.”

The brilliant multiple-award winning director Barrie Kosky, Chief Director at the Berlin Komische Oper, brings his creativity to this huge production which features more than 20 principal singers, 80 solo parts, a chorus of singers and dancers, and a large orchestra. Shostakovich’s score uses an eclectic montage of different musical and theatrical styles as the drama depicts a lowly official chasing his gallivanting nose around town. Adding to the spectacle are ten giant noses on the loose, which steal the show with their raucous tap dancing number.

Conducted by Andrea Molino, the cast includes bass-baritone Martin Winkler, bass Sir John Tomlinson and tenor Alexander Lewis as The Nose, all reprising their roles from the original season in London. Sung in English with a new translation from Russian by David Pountney, this is a unique opportunity to experience this masterpiece.

This production contains strong language.
