The Sydney Consort Presents Viol Serenity

The Sydney Consort invites you to hear music for viols in The Viol Serenity, featuring the viola da gamba, the tenor viol, and the viola d’amore with lute, theorbo and harpsichord.

Each of these instruments has its distinctive sound and they are as beautiful as depicted in the vivid musically themed paintings of Jan Vermeer.

The instruments had unequal qualities in sound – haunting and serene! The ‘aristocratic’ instruments such as the harpsichord and stringed instruments from the viol family were very popular in making music in many households.

The program will consist mostly of French repertoire, where the viola da gamba reigned supreme as a maker of fine music. The featured composers include Marin Marais, Henry Purcell and Antoine Forqueray along with Antonio Vivaldi and others.

The Musicians: Laura Moore viola da gamba, baroque cello/ Shaun Ng viola da gamba, lute, theorbo, baroque violin/ Stan W. Kornel Viola d’amore/ Fiona Ziegler tenor viol, baroque violin/ Monika Kornel harpsichord
