Willgoss Choral Composition Prize for 2024

The Music Performance Unit UNSW is calling for entries in the Willgoss Choral Composition Prize for 2024. This prize is the result of Dr. Richard and Sue Willgoss’ keen interest in composition and long-held passion for choral music and their hopes to  create a lasting contribution to choral music in Australia.

Previous winners include John Rotar for Songs about birds, forests, flowers and mountains, Oliver John Cameron for Five Lullabies for Uncertain Times, Philip Eames for This Great Unrain and Ronan Apcar for Preludes.

The prize is open to all Australian citizens and permanent residents, of any age and offers an opportunity for the winning composer to have their composition come to life. The piece should be 8-10 minutes long, an original work not previously performed, recorded or rewarded in previous composition competitions and written for unaccompanied SATB or SSATBB (no further divisions of parts) choir.

The winner of the prize will receive a cash prize of $AUD3000 in addition to the opportunity to have their piece performed by Corde, UNSW’s chamber choir in its annual evening recital in October 2024.

Applications open 25 September 2023 at 9.00am EST and close 1 February 2024 at 5.00pm EDST. The winner will be announced by 29 February 2024.
