Ancient Traditions Merge In Dance and Drumming

A novel and exciting collaboration is born with drumming ensemble TaikOz and classical Indian dance company Lingalayam joining forces to perform Chi Udaka, a world premiere presented by the Sydney Festival and the Seymour Centre.

The powerful rhythms of TaikOz merge with the intricate classical Indian dance movements of Bharatha Natyam and Kuchipudi as both cultures share a vocabulary steeped in centuries old history and tradition. They come together with their respective Japanese and Indian practices to break new ground, both common and divergent.

Inspired by the forces of nature, Chi Udaka is a meeting of the deep earthiness of taiko drumming (Chi – earth) and the flowing sensuality of dance (Udaka – water). Delicate and dramatic in turn, it unites the taiko drums of TaikOz, the shakuhachi flute of Riley Lee, cello and classical Indian singing from the performers of  Lingalayam.
