ARTSONG NSW remembers Amanda Thane OAM
The revered Australian soprano Amanda Thane OAM, who died late in 2012 will be remembered in an afternoon of song presented by the organisation she founded, ARTSONG NSW in association with colleagues and friends from Opera Australia.
Amanda Thane performed as one of Opera Australia’s leading sopranos for many years, and appeared in some of the world’s great opera houses and concert halls, singing the roles of Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata, Liu in Puccini’s Turandot, Eva in Wagner’s Meistersinger and Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. She sang as Valentine in Les Huguenots during Dame Joan Sutherland’s 1991 farewell performances in Sydney, later singing the role at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, followed by performances there as Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme, Antonia in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann and Lina in Verdi’s Stiffelio.
ARTSONG NSW will present a concert in Amanda’s memory on July 21, which includes some of the music that she held dear. Andrew Greene, the new President of ARTSONG NSW, says the event is planned as a joyous occasion commemorating a great Australian soprano and fellow artist. Musicians who have donated their services will include a fine ensemble of singers headed by the brilliant soprano Emma Matthews, renowned for her performances as Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Philomele in Mills’ The Love of the Nightingale and the memorable Violetta in La Traviata the 2012 Handa Opera on the Harbour. Also performing are mezzo-soprano Dominica Matthews, tenor Glenn Winslade, baritone Michael Honeyman, and bass David Parkin with pianists Kate Golla, Sharolyn Kimmorley AM and John Martin.
