The Sydney Youth Orchestra, led by Alexander Briger AO, will be joined by leading international sopranos, Cheryl Barker AO, Emma Pearson and Caroline Meng for a festival of Strauss, presenting three of the firebrand composer’s most challenging and thrilling works: Don Juan, Four Last Songs and excerpts from Der Rosenkavalier. Celebrating Strauss will be a rare collaboration of celebrated performers with the emerging talent of the orchestral players of the future performing some of the most beautiful and demanding music written.

The Sydney Youth Orchestra’s skill and professionalism will be on show with Der Rosenkavalier, which requires a virtuoso orchestra and three brilliant women whose voices blend, balance and counter-balance in the roles of Marschallin, performed by Cheryl Barker, her seventeen-year-old lover Octavian, performed by Caroline Meng and the innocent Sophie, performed by Emma Pearson. The final trio is an unforgettably exquisite cameo.

Fresh from her tour of India with Australian World Orchestra, this will be mezzo-soprano Caroline Meng’s only Australian appearance for 2018. Strauss’ Four Last Songs are the supreme artistic challenge for any lyric soprano and are revered and feared in equal measure. Lauded Australian soprano Cheryl Barker performs this apotheosis of Strauss’s life and work. Strauss’ Don Juan makes consummate demands on the orchestra, with the musicians expected to perform at the extremes of their instruments’ ranges and breath control from the wind players that is unmatched in earlier music.
