‘Gurrumul’ Signed To Decca

Decca Australia and Universal Music Australia have announced the signing of one of Australia’s most important and culturally defining recording artists of all time, the late Dr. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (1971–2017), known as ‘Gurrumul’ ensuring that his music will live on for new audiences and future generations. Forthcoming releases from Gurrumul on Decca Australia include limited editions of coloured vinyl, a box set of his complete recordings, collaborations with vocal, electronic and instrumental artists and an orchestral album.

In partnership with Skinnyfish Music, the signing to the Decca label comes on the eve of what would have been Gurrumul’s 50th birthday on 22nd January, 2021.

Since releasing his eponymous debut album in 2008, which subsequently won two ARIA awards for Independent Album and World Music Album, Gurrumul’s unique music has resonated with listeners in Australia and around the world. His voice connected with luminaries like Elton John, Quincy Jones, and Sting.

Born blind, Dr G. Yunupingu was a multi-ARIA award-winning musician who became an international star, capable of transcending cultural boundaries. He grew up as a member of the Gumatj clan on Elcho Island, off the coast of tropical North East Arnhem Land. His fragile but powerful high tenor voice touched audiences as he sang about Aboriginal identity and spirit, the connection with the land, its elements and the ancestral beings. Gurrumul’s music revolutionised the way people listened to and experienced his Yolngu cultural world.

Gurrumul eponymous debut album sold half a million copies worldwide, reaching triple platinum in Australia. His second solo album ‘Rrakala’ released in April 2011 has hit platinum. In 2014, Gurrumul performed at an exclusive gathering for the G20 leaders. Gurrumul also performed for His Holiness Pope John Paul II, HRH The Queen of England, US President Barack Obama and Crown Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark, in addition to being one of only two Australian performers at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace.
