An anniversary is a marvelous excuse for a gathering of friends, and in the case of Musica Viva’s 70th anniversary in 2015, the season is a reason to bring back some of its most popular performers from recent years.

Unveiling its 2015 season at Sydney’s City Recital Hall last week, Artistic Director Carl Vine AO, announced that Musica Viva will present tours by eight artists through the year, as well as the popular Music Viva festival during  the week after Easter.

Canadian baroque ensemble Tafelmusik returns to Sydney in February/March, under the direction of Jeanne Lamon with House of Dreams, a narrated multi-media journey through five historic European mansions, created by Alison Mackay.  Tafelmusik’s Galileo Project, another Mackay creation, was warmly received in Sydney in 2012, garnering a Helpmann Award for Best Chamber and/or Instrumental Ensemble Concert.

Celebrating 20 years of music making, the Goldner String Quartet tours in April/May combing the music of Beethoven with Ligeti and a new commission, the String Quartet no 3 by Paul Stanhope.

One of the highlights comes at the end of the year with the 70th Anniversary Gala recital tour by stellar violinist Maxim Vengarov with pianist Roustem  Saitkoulov in December, performing a programme that stretches from Bach to Prokofiev.

French chamber ensemble The Modigliani Quartet returns in October, and the Eggner siblings making up the Eggner Trio perform in November.

Revered cellist Steven Isserlis tours with Canadian Pianist Connie Shih in June performing Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Adès and Franck; British pianist Paul Lewis performs Beethoven and Brahms in August/September. As well, Mischa Maisky performs 3 of Bach’s cello suites and conducts masterclasses as part of the Musica Viva Festival.

British vocal ensemble I Fagiolini, is the new guest at the anniversary party, making its Australian debut in July/August directed by founder Robert Hollingsworth, in a programme that spans the centuries from Victoria and Gibbons to a world premiere performance of Andrew Schultz’s New York, commissioned for Musica Viva.

April sees the Musica Viva Festival, a collection of seven concerts, films, interviews, exhibitions and interactive events, held at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music over four days. The festival features the Australian Youth Orchestra, Mischa Maisky, the Pavel Haas quartet, guitarist Karin Schaupp and clarinettist Narek Arutyunian amongst others.

Happy Anniversary Musica Viva!
