Soprano Nadia Piave is joined by flautist Tina Marsden, guitarists Gino Pengue and Robert Clancy and Pino Scuro in recitation in Gracias a la vida, an evening of songs from the ‘cancionero iberico’..,,,and remembering Chile, Sept 11, 1973.

On the programme are the songs of Rodrigo, De Falla, Villa-Lobos, Piazzolla, Almeida, Victor Jara, Violeta Parra and Horacio Salinas along with the poems of Pablo Neruda. Gracias a la vida is an evening of Spanish and Portugese Art song and songs from the cancioneros of Violeta Parra, Victor Jara and Horacio Salinas and recollections of September 11, 1973 in Chile. Canciones of Chilean poet Pablo Nerudo also feature.

What began as a concert opportunity to sing some Spanish songs on a free Sunday night has become a singer’s journey into the heart of the South American nueva cancion. Nadia says “I can’t believe I haven’t heard Victor Jara’s beautiful voice, words and music before this.”

Nadia Piave is a Sydney performer, teacher, choral and workshop leader and concert organiser. Her voice is a musical paint box that brings to life all the colours and textures of repertoire from renaissance and baroque madrigals to Neapolitan serenades, from chansons and melodies of the Parisian musette and salon to tango songs and songs from French and Italian cinema of the 40’s to 80’s. Nadia performs with her own trio Caffe d’Amore, with Mosaic art ensemble and with ensemble Tango Paradiso. This concert is her first foray into the music of the South American nueva cancion.

Gino Pengue is one of Sydney’s most in-demand session guitarists and is a founding member of Marsala, Sydney’s most eclectic world music party band. He is one of 2/3rds of Nadia Piave’s Caffe d’Amore.

Mosaic Ensemble is a classical chamber group focussing on music composed for intimate settings. The group comprises Tina Marsden, flute, Robert Clancy, guitar and Nadia Piave, Vocals.

Pino Scuro is one of the best kept secrets in performing Sydney – actor, activist,singer and radio show host, Pino has performed with Nadia Piave on various occasions and has his own show based on the songs of Italian folk legend Fabrizio De Andre’s Anthology of Spoon River.
