Direct from its Royal Opera House performance, Australian cinemas will screen Tim Albery’s Olivier-nominated production of Wagner’s opera, Der fliegende Holländer, filmed and recorded live in high-definition from the stage of London’s Royal Opera at Covent Garden on 24 February 2015.

The opera tells the intense of the intense and dangerous attraction between The Flying Dutchman sung by Bryn Terfel, a man doomed to sail the seas for eternity, and Senta, sung by Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, the woman whose faithful love could redeem him.

The stark setting of the isolate Baltic community and dark themes of the opera are captured by Michael Levine’s atmospheric set designs, including a huge rolling metal hull that looms over the characters representing the oppressive phantom ship.

Conductor Andris Nelsons, acclaimed for his Wagner interpretations, returns to the podium of the Royal Opera House.

Following this filming, Bryn Terfel will be visiting Australia to perform with the Perth and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras. The cinema screenings of Der fliegende Holländer coincide with his March performances in Melbourne as Méphistophélès in The Damnation of Faust.
