Opera Australia celebrates its 150th performance of the stunningly beautiful production of Puccini’s opera Madama Butterfly. Opera Australia acknowledges this milestone with a special performance on Wednesday 25 February, 2015 at which 150 students will have the opportunity to see Madama Butterfly for 150 cents each with no booking fee.

To book, students need to go to either Opera Australia’s box office at 480 Elizabeth Street Surry Hills, or the Sydney Opera House box office from 9am on Wednesday 25 February with their ID and cash**. Limit to two tickets per student.

With more than 200,000 people seeing it in Sydney since its premiere season in 1997, this production, directed by Moffatt Oxenbould is now the most successful opera at the Sydney Opera House and may not be performed again in Sydney.

For its 150th performance, Australian soprano Antoinette Halloran will take the role of Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly) with Australian tenor James Egglestone as Pinkerton and maestro Anthony Legge on the podium. Despite the turmoil of the relationships on stage the behind-the-scenes reality is that Antoinette and James are actually a real-life couple!

The simple lines, blocks of colour, bold choreography and clever use of screens and water are an artwork on stage. The production has been seen not just in Sydney but all over the world, travelling to China, Canada and America. In fact, the total number of performances, in Australia and internationally, is well over 200! Madama Butterfly currently ranks at No.1 in Opera America’s list of most performed operas in North America, winning audiences with its iconic arias, including Cio-Cio-San’s breathtaking and poignant Un bel dì vedremo (‘One Beautiful Day’) and the beautifully delicate Coro a bocca chiusa (‘Humming Chorus’).

Tickets for Madama Butterfly start at $69. Madama Butterfly is playing at Sydney Opera House until 28 March 2015.
