Palace Opera And Ballet: La Damnation De Faust From Paris

In the Palace Opera & Ballet 2016 Season, superstars Jonas Kaufmann, Sophie Koch and Bryn Terfel return to the Paris Opera with Alvis Hermanis’s new staging of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, a forceful légende dramatique, the first of a Berlioz cycle which is to continue over several seasons.

Goethe’s story of a man who sells his soul to the devil so fascinated the composer, and as if swept away, Berlioz became as one with his eventual creation. The voice that invokes “immense, impenetrable and proud nature” is entirely his own, its extraordinary breadth transcending traditional forms to become a symphonic and operatic dream. Philippe Jordan conducts the Orchestre de l’Opera national de Paris, captured live from Opera Bastille, Paris 17 Dec 2015.
