A new production of Bizet’s bewitching opera Carmen, captured live during the European summer from the stage amidst the impressive ruins at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, screens in Sydney this weekend.

Created by the exciting Latin director Valentina Carrasco of La Fura dels Baus, sets Bizet’s tale of the passionate yet destructive love of a woman who values her freedom above all else. Set not in 19th Century Seville, but on the border between Mexico and the United States.

Recorded live on 28 June 2017, the star cast is led by acclaimed Italian mezzo-soprano Veronica Simeoni as Carmen, with Roberto Aronica as Don Josè and Alexander Vinogradov as Escamillo. Award-winning Spanish conductor Jesús López-Cobos leads the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma orchestra.

Sung in French with English subtitles.
