The Sydney Chamber Choir presents Benjamin Britten’s landmark cantata Saint Nicolas in a massed choral concert with guest conductor Brett Weymark in which the choir will be augmented with singers from the Santa Sabina Chamber Choir and the NSW Public Schools Singers. Instrumentalists include musicians from the NSW Public Schools Percussion Ensemble, a string quartet led by violist Nicole Forsyth and the Great Hall’s majestic organ will add further musical power to this exceptional concert.

Tenor Richard Butler is the soloist, Nicolas, in this dramatic nine scene piece, written in 1948 which presents legends from the life of Nicolas, patron saint of children, seamen, and travelers.

Also in the programme, 15 female singers give voice to the soaring melodies of the 12th century abbess and mystic Hildegard von Bingen, a double choir presentation of Bach’s motet of reassurance, Furchte dich nicht (Be Not Afraid) and the Magnificat by Buxtehude.
