The Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS) presents its first concert of 2014, featuring Vivaldi’s Magnificat RV 610 and Schubert’s Mass no 2 in G D 167 accompanied by a string orchestra and organ.

Vivaldi’s Magnificat, a nine-movement mass for four-part chorus, strings and continuo is filled with rich contrasts of tonality, tempo, meter and rhythmic figures, homophonic and polyphonic textures and choral and solo contrasts. The music has a theatrical quality which appeals to contemporary audiences. Following this is Schubert’s six-movement Mass no, 2 in G, D 167. This youthful work creates a devotional mood characteristic of Schubert’s religious compositions and showcases the composer’s immense lyrical skill.

Conducted by Tim Chung, the  soloists are soprano Josie Ryan, mezzo-soprano Jenny Duck-Chong, tenor Paul Sutton and bass Jonathan Chan.

Tickets: $20/25/30. They are available at the door or online.
