Zoe Drummond Wins The 2018 Mathy Scholarship

Congratulations to soprano Zoe Drummond who is the winner of the 2018 Marianne Mathy Scholarship (‘The Mathy’).

The 25-year-old received a purse of $30,000 to assist with a programme of study and/or singing activity. As well, she won the Audition Prize from the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center, the opportunity to audition for Lyric Opera of Chicago’s professional-artist development program, the Lili Ussher Portrait Prize, a painting of the winner in concert dress, the Oral History Award a taped interview by oral historian Diana Ritch that will be retained within the Oral History Collection of the National Library of Australia, The Mathy, a limited-edition Drago Marin Cherina sculpture presented by Music & Opera Singers Trust Ltd (MOST®) and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra Prize, a professional engagement to perform with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

Zoe performed Nel grave tormento from Mozart’s Mitridate Re di Ponto as her first item and then Sul fil d’un soffio etesio from Verdi’s Falstaff. She will appear with Opera Australia in the role of Giroflé/ Girofla in the operetta ‘Two Weddings, One Bride’ at the Playhouse, Arts Centre Melbourne in November 2019.

Dr Nicholas Milton AM and the Opera Australia Orchestra accompanied the finalists and also performed the Overtures to Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Gershwin’s Girl Crazy, and Don Juan from Opus 20 by Strauss. Guest Artist Adrian Tamburini (2017 Opera Awards Winner) opened the second half of the concert with a playful rendition of Mozart’s Madamina, il catalogo è questo (the Catalogue aria) from Don Giovanni.

The Adjudication Panel comprising Linnhe Robertson (National Adjudicator), Michael Halliwell, Anthony Hunt, Noëmi Nadelmann and Raff Wilson also awarded the prizes to the other finalists.
