An Italian Romance With ARCO

Romance is the theme for the year as ARCO, the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra presents Italian Romance, featuring the music of Beethoven and Mendelssohn.

This inspired ensemble of historically informed performers bring a revitalised spirit and energy to these masterpieces by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, conducted by the brilliant Benjamin Bayl, principal guest conductor of the ensemble.

The program includes Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, the twelve playful Contredanses and the sublime Romance for violin, performed by concertmaster Rachael Beesley.

After the interval the full string orchestra playing on pure gut strings, will perform Wolf’s Italian Serenade for Strings followed by Mendelssohn’s Italian’ Symphony in A major. 

The programme: Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827): Coriolan Overture in C minor Op.62 (1807)/ Romance for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 in F major Op. 50 (1798)/ Twelve Contredanses for Orchestra WoO14 (1792-1802)

Hugo Wolf (1860-1903): Italian Serenade in G major for Strings (1887, strings version 1892)

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847): ‘Italian’ Symphony in A major Op.90 (1833)
