Australia Ensemble And Tinalley String Quartet In ‘Bright Young Things’

The Australia Ensemble
The Australia Ensemble

A youthful vigour and brilliance abound when the Australia Ensemble joins with guest artists the Tinalley String Quartet in their programme Bright Young Things, an evening of music written by the masters when they were precocious young composers.

Felix Mendelssohn’s incomparable String Octet was written when he was just 16; likewise, Richard Strauss’ Piano Quartet is a lesser known early work, strongly influenced by Brahms and one of the few chamber pieces by this master of opera and tone-poem.

Darius Milhaud’s sonata meanwhile, is an impressively-crafted neo-classical work for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano typifying the love of French composers for woodwind sonorities.

Adding to the world of woodwind music is a new clarinet sonata by young Australian composer, Andrew Ball, which receives its world premiere here, commissioned by Dr Andrew Kennedy and dedicated to long-serving Australia Ensemble clarinettist Catherine McCorkill.

Darius MILHAUD Sonata for flute, oboe, clarinet and piano (1918)
Richard STRAUSS Piano Quartet op. 13 (1885)
Andrew BALL New work (2016)
Felix MENDELSSOHN Octet in E flat major, op. 20 (1825)
