London friends! Following its sell-out 2018 residency, the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) returns to London for a second season in-residence at the Barbican Centre.

The ACO is the only Australian orchestra to hold an international residency. This season marks the mid-point of the ACO’s three-year partnership with the prestigious concert venue and follows the orchestra’s sell-out inaugural season in 2018.

The ACO’s 2019 Barbican season is a characteristically bold and eclectic mix that epitomises the daring, the virtuosity, the energy and the sense of adventure for which it is renowned. Once again, the ACO will collaborate with an inspiring and diverse collection of artists, presenting concerts which shed new light on the great music of the past and present.

To open its 2019 Barbican season, the ACO will perform Bernard Labadie’s enlightening string orchestra arrangement of Bach’s revered Goldberg Variations. The ACO gave the Australian premiere of this work in 2018 to critical acclaim.

Following this is the UK premiere of Richard Tognetti and photographer Bill Henson’s breathtaking cross-artform collaboration, Luminous. Featuring singer-songwriter Lior on vocals, Luminous is a ‘beautiful and mysterious’ (The Guardian) multi-sensory journey.

Concluding the season, the ACO will perform two much loved British orchestral works – Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, featuring Richard Tognetti, and Britten’s Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge. The concert will also see the ACO collaborate with students from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a performance of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night.

The 2019 season will mark the second year of the ACO’s three-year residency as International Associate Ensemble at Milton Court in partnership with the Barbican Centre. This residency follows on from the success of ACO Artistic Director Richard Tognetti’s appointment as the Barbican’s first ever Artist-in-Residence at Milton Court Concert Hall in the 2016/17 season.
