The Australian Haydn Ensemble’s inaugural concert for 2018 brings the experience of hearing music in London as it was performed in Josef Haydn’s day.

Josef Haydn was a respected celebrity by the time he made his way to London in 1795. To celebrate his influence on the city’s musical life, the AHE under the artistic direction of Skye McIntosh, launches 2018 with this all-Haydn program.

The season opens with Haydn’s beautiful London Flute Trio, and concludes with his famous London Symphony arranged for chamber ensemble by his dear friend, Johann Salomon. Salomon, concertmaster in Haydn’s orchestra throughout the 1770s, was a key figure in the 18th century music scene. He was also one of the few permitted by the composer to arrange his music.

The program also features his enthralling String Quartet Op. 74 No. 3, The Rider. This work was written for his friend Count Apponyi of Vienna, but was premiered in London at the Hanover Square Rooms’ concerts with Salomon leading the quartet.
