Australian World Orchestra 5th Anniversary Double Bill
The Australian World Orchestra will celebrate its 5-year anniversary in 2016 with two performances conducted by Alexander Briger and Stanley Dodds. The programmes feature works by Beethoven, Dvorak, Ravel, Tchaikovsky and the world premiere of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Concerto for 8 double basses The Witching Hour.
Following the success of the 2015 season under Sir Simon Rattle, Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and an unprecedented international tour to India under Zubin Mehta, 94 of Australia’s finest musicians from home and around the world will regather on stage at the Sydney Opera House.
The Australian World Orchestra comprises musicians who play with great orchestras around the world including Australia’s own state orchestras. The AWO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Alexander Briger, will conduct one programme which will include Ravel’s orchestral tour de force Boléro, the world-premiere of Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin’s The Witching Hour Concerto for 8 Double Basses, commissioned by AWO and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 5 in E minor, opus 64.
Making his AWO conducting debut in the second programme will be Australian-born conductor and violinist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Stanley Dodds, who will direct Beethoven’s 7th Symphony and Dvorak’s 9th Symphony “From the New World”.
