Sydney opera lovers were delighted by Sir David McVicar’s production of The Marriage of Figaro for Opera Australia seen earlier this year.

Palace Opera and Ballet screens the cinema version of Sir David McVicar’s acclaimed Covent Garden production of Mozart’s lively and gloriously fun comic opera about love, infidelity and forgiveness. The action is set in a French château in 1830 on the eve of revolution. Figaro (Erwin Schrott) and Susanna (Sophie Bevan) are looking forward to their wedding day – but Figaro’s master, Count Almaviva (Stéphane Degout) has designs on Susanna. Ivor Bolton conducts what is often considered the perfect opera.

Filmed during the live performance of October 5, 2015, this screening is presented by British actor and theatre director Simon Callow, who will take viewers behind the scenes to explore the music, plot twists and the elegant staging of the production.

Sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Please note programme change: due to illness, Sophie Bevan replaces the originally billed Anita Hartig as ‘Susanna’ in the ROH cinema production of The Marriage of Figaro.
